Choosing a LoRaWAN Gateway: Indoor, Outdoor and Backhaul Options

The right LoRaWAN gateway is set by three choices: where it will be mounted, how it will reach the network server, and which frequency band the sensors use. Price at volume comes after those three, and it varies widely across the models below.

Indoor gateways

Indoor gateways cover a floor, a building or a small campus from a ceiling, a wall or an equipment room. They are the lowest cost way to add coverage inside concrete structures and basements.

Gateway Backhaul in the listing Single unit Lowest volume price
Kerlink Wirnet iFemtoCell IFE01, US915 Wi-Fi, Ethernet $120.00 $90.00 at 200+
Kerlink Wirnet iZeptoCell, US915 See product page $149.33 Quote
Dragino LPS8 See product page $350.00 Quote
TEKTELIC KONA Micro, NA 915 3G/4G modem, battery backup $430.00 $258.00 at 200+
Kerlink Wirnet iFemtoCell-evolution, US915 4G, Ethernet $499.00 Quote

Outdoor gateways

Outdoor gateways go on rooftops, towers and poles, where height gives each unit the widest coverage. They carry weatherproof enclosures and are the building block of city, campus and utility networks.

Kerlink Wirnet iStation, US915 4G, Ethernet $665.00 $399.00 at 200+

Backhaul

Ethernet is the most dependable backhaul where a cable run exists. Cellular backhaul lets a gateway go anywhere with power and a mobile signal, which suits lift stations, parking structures and remote sites. Several outdoor units carry both, so Ethernet can serve as the main link and cellular as the backup.

Band and network server

Match the gateway band to the sensors: US915 in North America, EU868 in Europe, AS923 in parts of Asia and the Pacific. Then confirm that the gateway is supported by the network server in use. The Kerlink iStation and iFemtoCell run with ThingPark Enterprise, and the MultiTech Conduit and Kerlink iFemtoCell-evolution listings are qualified for AWS IoT Core for LoRaWAN.

Installation hardware

Outdoor gateways also need an antenna, lightning and surge protection and, for PoE models, an injector. These items are grouped in the Deployment Hardware collection.
