LoRaWAN Gateway Installation Hardware: Antennas, Surge Protection, Filters and PoE

An outdoor LoRaWAN gateway performs only as well as its antenna, its surge protection and its power supply. Ordering these items together with the gateways avoids a second trip up the tower and keeps the whole kit in one volume order.

Antenna

A higher-gain omnidirectional antenna, mounted clear of the roofline and nearby metal, extends the horizontal reach of an outdoor gateway. Keep the coaxial run between antenna and gateway short, since every meter of cable loses signal.

RF surge protection

A lightning arrestor between the antenna and the gateway, bonded to the site ground, protects the radio from surges picked up by the antenna and its cable.

PoE power and PoE surge protection

Power over Ethernet carries power and data on one cable to a gateway on a mast or rooftop. The injector stays indoors, and a surge protector on the outdoor end of the Ethernet run protects both the gateway and the network equipment inside.

Cavity filter for shared towers

Gateways mounted on towers or rooftops shared with cellular transmitters can be desensitized by strong nearby signals. A cavity filter passes the LoRaWAN band and rejects those signals, restoring the gateway's receive sensitivity.
